PRACTICAL INFORMATION
LAYOUT
Ubud's streets are simple - thank goodness! Jalan Raya Ubud is the main street running east and west. The locals refer to Jalan Ubud as "main street" and "Jalan Ubud." Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Hanoman run north and south and intersect Jalan Raya Ubud at the north end and converge the Monkey Forest Park at the south end.
Most of Ubud's highlights take place on Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Raya Ubud. And, most of the hotels, shops and nightlife are located on Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Raya Ubud.
Ubud, however, is only a small town that's surrounded by many other villages, including Campuhan and Sayan to the west, Padang Tegal to the south, Taman and Laplapan to the east and Kedewatan to the north.
VISAS
VOA: if you're from the United States, Canada, Europe (parts), you can get a visa on arrival at the Ngurah Rai Airport.
Cost: $25 for US
GETTING THERE
You can only reach Ubud by land. Hire a cab, driver or rent a motorcycle to reach Ubud.
Country Code: 62, area code: 0361
Time Zone: GMT +8
Money: See Ubud Money section
Tipping: You don't need to tip in Bali. However, from my experience, tipping is welcomed of course. It's not like Beijing where the wait staff runs after you with your tip if you leave one. Rp5,000 is a good amount for the wait staff at high end restaurants, bell hops, etc.
Note: There is no need to tip a hired driver. You negotiate a price for a certain timeframe and just pay that price.
Electricity: 220V 50 Hz.
SIM Cards: It's important to note that sim cards are not sold at convenience stores. SIM Cards in Bali can only be bought at mobile stores that have the "SIM Cards" as well as photo shops. Sim cards in Indonesia have to be registered and you need an ID number for that. The clerks at the stores have to put sim cards into their own phones and register them. This is the process that I had to go through in Kuta and Sanur as well as in Ubud. See Ubud Convenience Stores section.
